Cathedral of the Almudena
The Cathedral of the Almudena is the most important religious building in Madrid. On June 15, 1993, it was consecrated by Pope John Paul II, becoming the first cathedral consecrated outside of Rome.
The construction of the cathedral began on April 4, 1883 when King Alfonso XII laid the first stone. The promoter of the project and its architect was Francisco de Cubas.
The interior of La Almudena is surprising to have completely different details to other cathedrals: the ceiling and stained glass give way to the classic style to give way to vivid colors and straight lines.
The museum
The Museum of the Cathedral of the Almudena gathers dozens of objects that tell the story of the diocese of Madrid. In the twelve rooms with which the museum counts, you will see from mosaics to episcopal shields and ornament.
Although the museum is small, the visit is more interesting than it might seem at first.
Visit the dome
Unlike in cathedrals like Notre Dame, the ascent to the dome of La Almudena is neither spectacular nor the views are especially good. We recommend the visit to the dome only if you want to see the museum, since the entrance is combined.
